All companies in Hessen, with the exception of craft businesses, liberal professions, and agricultural businesses, are required by law to be members of a chamber of industry and commerce. In total, more than 400,000 Hessian companies of all sizes and from all sectors are members of the IHK. The umbrella organization at the state level is the Hessian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (HIHK), based in Wiesbaden. The HIHK represents the interests of the business community vis-à-vis (state) politics, administration, courts, and the public. The Chambers of Industry and Commerce in Darmstadt, Frankfurt am Main, Fulda, Gießen-Friedberg, Hanau-Gelnhausen-Schlüchtern, Kassel-Marburg, Lahn-Dill, Limburg, Offenbach am Main, and Wiesbaden are active as regional contact points. Those interested in starting a business and start-ups can contact them. In addition to representing the general interests of the business community at the regional level, the chambers of commerce and industry also provide information and services for them.
